Eleven teams from
seven countries took to the Gridiron for the European World Cup NIT.
Teams were competing for seeding at the World Cup and cash to be
given away in Costa Rica. It was the second time Italy hosted a
World Cup NIT, as in 2001 Genova played host.
A Total of 57 5Man No Contact games were played. It was
Iron man Flag Football as each team played 10 games with the top two
teams facing off for a championship. The Sharks(9-1) of DenMark
took on Mayhem(8-2) of England.In round robin action the
Sharks won 25-18 but the championship game was not the same result
as the team from Midenhall Airforce Base put on there game and
defeated the #1 seeded team from Denmark 27-19. In the Title game
the Sharks took a quick 13-0 lead as both Mayhem drives were
intercepted and quickly turned into scores. Mayhem bounced back with
a quick score and on the last play of the half the they took the
lead on a 20 yard TD catch and two point conversion made it 14-13.
In the second half the Sharks came out on fire and scored on the
first drive taking the lead 19-14. Under two minutes remaining, and
4th and 25, Mayhem QB Bob Black completed the pass to
Robert Trace
for the touchdown and
the lead. Mayhem went for the two point conversion
where Black threw his patented behind the
back pass to the center, Damien Lee to take the lead 21-19.
With 35 seconds remaining the sharks threw a pass which was
intercepted by Stacy Cochran and returned to the house for the 27-19
for the final Score.
The Sharks still hada a chance with 10 remaining to tie the game, bit both
hailmarys feel short.
In the 3rd place game the Mamuth of Denmark defeated
the Only Team with World Cup experience the Cleavers of Italy 32-19.
The Cleavers participated in the
5th annual World Cup in Miami,FL USA.
