The Final Game

Team USA held its own in the title bout against Mexico scoring its first touchdown when quarterback Pat Connelly (Taco Surf - Los Angeles) scrambled into the end zone from 15 yards out. James Mayo caught the extra point for the conversion to give the USA a 7-0 edge. The Americans upped the lead to 14-0 when Connelly hit a streaking Mayo for a 30-yards touchdown pass. Angel Perez (Raw Talent - Miami, FL) hauled in the conversion pass. Team USA ran in another score and Jim Wilson scored the 1-point conversion to grab a 21-0 halftime lead. The United States dominated second-half play and scored one more touchdown as its defense committed the only breakdown of the game allowing Mexico's only touchdown, a 20-yards touchdown pass that capped all scoring at 28-7.

Mexico's surprise run to the 9Man Contact championship game still couldn't keep Team USA from another World Cup title. Team USA procured its fourth consecutive championship but faced a new foe in Mexico. The Mexicans upset Team Canada to advance to the championship game.

We saw an impressive 72-teams field with delegates from 12 different countries that arrived for the 4th annual World Cup of Flag Football in the Bahamas. The island nation's Ministry of Tourism welcomed the international community with an opening ceremony that featured the Bahamas' Minister of Tourism and Minister of Sports as guests.
 

The World Cup attracted an enormous quantity of players despite travel restrictions and was constantly hounded by radio, television and newspaper media.

Also participating in the men's 9Man Contact tournament were Bahamas, Cayman Islands, England, France, Israel and Uruguay.

Team USA defeated Israel 26-7 in the semifinals while Mexico upset Canada 6-0 in the semis to reach the championship game. Canada finished 3rd while Israel was in 4th pace.

Mexico didn't go home empty handed. The Mexican women's team doubled up Canada 32-18 to secure the 7Man championship trophy. Team Mexico outscored its opponents 72-14 through the playoffs before routing Canada in the championship game. Canada was the only team to score twice against Mexico. Team USA defeated France 7-0 in the 3rd place game while Venezuela finished 5th.
