4th Annual World Cup of Flag Football
February 19 - 23,2003
in Freeport/Grand Bahama, Bahamas

(USA Teams need to place in the Top Ten in their respective division at a World Cup qualifier to participate in the World Cup of Flag Football tournament.International teams do not have to qualify.)

A record number of flags could be pulled in Freeport/Grand Bahama, Bahamas, as nearly every country in the flag-football-playing world is scheduled to be in attendance for the fourth annual World Cup of Flag Football on Feb. 20-24th,2003.

The event is drawing more interest this year, despite some difficulty traveling caused by the 9-11 disaster. Since visas aren't required in the Bahamas, all countries and a few new entries are expected to invade the Bahamas capitol city for this year's World Cup.

"I am very pleased that Royal Oasis Resort and Casino and the Bahamas have agreed to host the 4th World Cup of Flag Football. Players from all over the world will not only play in the World Cup and World Open tournaments, they will also have a chance to enjoy the warm sun and hospitality of the Bahamas," said IFFF CEO Adam Froelich.

Teams are playing on a rugby field adjacent to a swimming pool and full bar. All teams are staying at the Royal Oasis Resort and Casino , which also features two USGA-rated championship golf courses, a million gallon sand pool with two water slides, three swim-up bars and a 3-story waterfall, five bars and lounges, a fitness center and spa, five shops, tennis courts, a jogging trail and casino. It is also located near 85 specialty shops, restaurants.

"The Bahamas will be a perfect host country," FlagMag.com President Jim Zimolka said. "They are very excited and welcome the tournament.

Teams staying at the hotel must book rooms at the hotel by January 17th,2003, the room cost is $99 per night plus tax. Each room can hold four people.

Airfare is also being discounted and costs about $100 from Fort Lauderdale, FL., and about $300 from Baltimore, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Atlanta, Boston and other selected cities.

Last year's World Cup drew 75 teams(20 International), including teams from England, France, Canada, United States, Mexico, Venezuela and Israel. It was nearly triple the size of the second World Cup, which drew 27 teams from just 12 nations.

There were also 20 women's teams participating in last year's event.

This year teams from Spain, Ukraine, Switzerland, Italy, Russia, Guatemala, Panama, Virgin Islands and Ghana are expected to attend. Their presence should add to an already growing flavor anticipated at this year's tournament.

"Teams are improving. Every year gets better and better. We'd like to get the sport to the Olympics in 10 years," Zimolka said. "Several teams have potential and experience. The Bahamas was the biggest team in the second World Cup. It's their home country. Venezuela has also improved greatly. The Venezuelan captain has been traveling with me to learn the game, and so has the women's captain Corina Moldonado (Miss FlagMag.com).

"Spain was competitive; they look to be a strong new contender. England has size and now has some good experience."

Freeport/Lucaya (http://www.bahamasgateway.com/freeport.htm)(http://www.grand-bahama.com/main.htm) is the island's capitol city and the second largest city in the islands. It is a key tourist destination and was specifically designed for the tourist trade.

Freeport is located within a 230-square-mile free trade zone on Grand Bahamas Island, established in 1955 by the government of the Bahamas. It promotes good business and a good life.

The Grand Bahamas Port Authority operates the free trade zone and is deferred special powers by the government.

The inhabitants of the island, which are thought to originally be the Siboney-Meso Indians, are mainly of African descent and 85-percent are black. The population of the Bahamas is about 283,700, with 60-percent living on New Providence.

Historically, the islands also include the first landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World at San Salvador, a small east central port of the Bahamas chain on Oct. 12, 1492. When Columbus discovered the islands he found the Lucayans and called them 'Indians' inadvertently. He believed he was in the Indies of the Pacific Ocean.

The islands celebrated the 500th anniversary of Columbus' landing in 1992.

The Bahamas have since claimed fame in the women's 400-meter relay, winning a silver medal in 1996 and a gold medal in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

The drinking age on the islands is 18, which is taken advantage of by many young Americans who visit the island during the high point of the college spring break season. Gambling also has an 18-year-old age requirement.

GOLF

The Ruby - With trade winds always blowing on every hole, coupled with a challenging new Fazio design, the Ruby provides and excellent golf experience. The Fazio design group's reshaping of fairways, bunkers and greens have taken this Joe Lee design to a new level of play. Numerous sugar white bunkers gives the eye a pleasing contrast against the emerald colored fairways and greens, but steer clear of these steep lipped traps or the results may not be sweet.

Length of course - 6,750 yards
Par / Slope / Rating - 72/122/72.4

The Emerald - The Emerald is cut through thick and beautiful vegetation, but has wide fairways and landing areas. The greens are well protected with numerous bunkers and sand comes in play on several of your drives. This course allows you to pull the "Big Dawg" out on all of the par 4's and 5's and from the back tees a couple of the par 3's might need the driver. The Fazio Design Group has turned this course into a challenge for all levels of play.

Length of Course: 6,679 yards
Par/Slope/Rating - 72/121/72.3
