Dallas, TX-World Cup Qualifier

This year’s World Cup hosted by the great city of Dallas, TX was for the third consecutive year a smashing success. Sixteen teams from the states of Georgia, Florida, Texas, and Louisiana battled for the chance to qualify for the World Cup in the Dominican Republic.

This year’s tournament featured unparalleled intensity and excitement from all 16 teams. The competitive spirit was at an all time high as each team entertained hopes of playing in the paradise of the Dominican Republic at this year’s World Cup 2004.

In what is normally a runaway tournament for the hometown teams of Dallas, this year’s event saw a shift in success for the visiting states. Both the 7Man and 4Man Titles were captured by teams from Georgia and Florida respectively. It seems as though the teams representing Texas have become complacent and have rested on their past laurels. Unfortunately for Texas, flag football, is a game of intensity, who wants it more, and this year it certainly wasn’t Texas.

In the 7Man event, Untouchables from Atlanta, Georgia, brought their A-game as they did the Texas two-step all over their opponents in a blazing run to the title. The final pitted the Untouchables against Houston’s own Heat. In a classic battle of two giants, the game featured many lead changes and ups and downs for both teams. The Untouchables just proved to be too much and seemed to want it more than the Heat as they edged out a victory and a birth to the World Cup Dominican by a final score of 27-25.

In the 4Man event, Team Hutch, Miami, FL, steamrolled through the Texas competition on their way to the title. Team Hutch wasted no time and broke very few beads of sweat as they dominated Heat, TX, the Mustangs, TX, and Venom, TX.

In a non-native 4man final, it was Miami’s finest, Team Hutch vs. the Untouchables from Atlanta, Georgia. With a 26-14 victory, the boys from Miami earned a respective bid in the World Cup Dominican, alongside the 7Man victors, Untouchables. Both teams will play hard and party hard this year as they vie for the World Cup title.

In the 4Man silver division, Arrogance from Houston, TX was literally the Lone-Star from the state of Texas. The Houston boys were the only natives to capture a title and thus bragging rights towards their Texan brethren.

In what is sure to be a wake up call for the Texas teams, the 2003 World Cup qualifier was a successful event for visiting teams. Next year, Texas will need to perform better if they hope to represent what was once a breeding ground for great flag football teams.
