The West Coast starts a series of IFFF World Cup
of flag football regional qualifiers in Los Angeles, CA this
weekend. This is the third year the IFFF has been to this market
and all qualifiers have been successful. The LA flag football
market like any other is strong in particular categories, in this
scenario 4man is the stronger sector. At the last World Cup event
in the Bahamas, LA was our qualifiers unlike the dominant 8man and
4man categories. An indication that at the actual World Cup event
we should witness a bigger and more competitive 7man section. Most
of the teams will qualify for the World Cup of which over 80
strong teams have already gone through the process. The next stop
for the IFFF is Flint which is new and then the big one at Ft
Lauderdale; teams have already started enquiring about these
tournaments as everyone wants to gain a spot at the World Cup.

IFFF regional qualifier, LA,

For the first time in the history of the IFFF regional qualifiers
Jim Dutra former QB for Team
USA in 2000, 01 and 02 came head to head with Pat Connolly current
Team USA QB (Bahamas 2003). Jim Dutra one of the loyal players to
the IFFF and World Cup of flag football has traveled to Mexico on
three occasions to assist Jim Zimolka with the promotion of the
sport and also represent his country. In Freeport, Bahamas Jim
Dutra was commended with a special award for recognition for
participating in all four annual World Cup events. However, with
his status as one of the most experienced QB’s in the game of flag
football Jim Dutra was not selected to play for Team USA because
he did not meet the requirement which is to travel two countries.
Pat Connolly led the Team USA offence in the Bahamas to their 4th
successive World Championship and already traveled to both France
and Canada to help the IFFF promote the game. The LA regional
final was always going to be a cracker all the teams were packed
with talent and have a core understanding of the 8on8 game. The
Swarm led by Jim Dutra however, thrashed Pat Connolly’s Taco surf
35-6 which does not justify a hard fought
game. These teams participated in the last World Cup event in
Freeport and have booked their spot to play in the World Cup event
that is coming up in February 2004 in Puerto Plata, Dominican
Republic, also present at the last World Cup was highly rated
Cobras from Vista, CA. Most of the guys that participated in this
event are ambassadors to the sport and have traveled with
Flagmag/IFFF to help develop the programs of affiliated members
such as Mexico, Venezuela, France etc showing that there is a lot
of interest coming from the West Coast market.
