WORLD CUP 2004
NEWS

Open Tournament Preview |
|
The World Cup Open starts on the 27th of February with the first
game commencing right after the World Cup Finals. for both men and
women. This year our World Cup Open event has been graced with its
highest participating teams in the youth category. Although most
of the teams participating this year are new, we still have teams
from the past years attending, such as Jim Dutra's Swarm, Anita
Mark's Stingrays ,
Jimmy Wilson's Alliance and Raw Talent, Gators, Fluer De Lys,
Obelix and NUPA are all here again. In last years 8man category
EastSide Mafia won the crown with runners up honors going to
Alliance, Anita Marks put an end to Mexican Dominance beating them
for the 7man women's crown, Ely M are not here to defend there
7man men's category and neither is Aerial Assault but Raw Talent
are back again to try and dominate the 4man sector. Over the past
years the World Cup Open is always action-packed with the best
teams in the USA competing against tough opposition from Canada,
Mexico and the international teams from the World Cup. Its fun
packed and just 7 days away.
Players to watch: Jim Dutra (CA), James Mayo (MD), Ade Akitoye
(England), Arty Hazard (NH), Anita Marks (FL), Kevin Dawkins
(Canada) and many more....

Country
Preview
This year's World Cup
event will definitely be full of surprises and entertainment,
especially after last years upset. I am going to take you through
the countries for both men and women with a brief summary of their
chances at this years event.
WOMEN'S
PREVIEW
Mexico -
Very skillful and tactical team, defending champions and looking
to hold on to their title, the only problem is whether they will
turn up or not. A great bunch of girls and an asset to the game.
Canada -
Just as strong as Mexico but just like their Men's team lacked the
killer instinct. In terms of the game they are extremely talented,
skillful and competitive - pretty also. They will definitely give
Mexico a run for their money.
USA - Not as
strong as the top two but are getting better. This year they
arrive with a young group. Not expecting too much but you never
know as this game is full of surprises, they will be without
Stingray veteran Tammy but have some good players coming in.
Venezuela -
A new group that participates in the Venezuelan league is coming
this year. The game has grown since their first World Cup in
Cocoa, FL and the team hold depth in experience and talent.
Players to watch Grett and Anna.
Israel -
First year, strong men's team that has most likely coached them
very well and would be expecting them to play hard and good ball.
Dominican
Republic - Still going through the development stages but look
promising.
Men's Preview
USA (men) -
Team USA are unbeaten in the previous four World Cups and are
definitely favorites to clinch the title again. With players like
James Mayo, Jim Wilson and Isias whom all traveled to three
countries helping Flagmag promote the sport, with their extensive
experience and knowledge of the game pose a threat on or off form.
Mexico (men)
- Finalist last year and lost to a strong USA outfit, although
they upset the Canadian national team, they just couldn't pull it
off against the USA team. Strong contenders for the finals due to
their different style of play and skills which they possess in
abundance.
Canada (men)
- Had a strong squad that had most players play in three previous
World Cups but lacked the enthusiasm and killer instinct from
previous events. They have great potential in their quick and
short plays, abundance of experience and always create a party
environment.
Israel (men) -
Another good team that over the years has improved as they
have already beaten Team USA once on their France tour last year.
An exciting QB and powerful offensive line will always be a threat
to anyone, will give the top three a run for their money.
England (men) -
We don't really know what to make of them, in their third year
its difficult to say whether they will do well or not. Possess
speed and agility in Ade, while Austin and Butch have been playing
amongst top USA players given the opportunity to learn and then
develop the program in the UK. Played in one of the exciting games
last year versus Euro rivals France (4 OT's).
Cayman Island
(men) - A second year team that saw what the game is all about
last year in the Bahamas. They are all geared up to show that
although they are a small country have the ability to deliver a
major blow on someone, watch out who knows it could be you.
St Croix (men)
- One of the new teams, first time in the event, witnessed the
event last year as observer's and are a very enthusiastic group.
One of the first teams to register and lets hope they will show
that on the field also.
Dominican
Republic (men) - Slowly put together by Fernando Rodriguez and
Butch who have over the past 8 weeks spent a lot of time with them
teaching them a completely new game. Got a good structure in place
with energetic youth and also some experienced, mature crop of
guys. Personally, just like the St Croix may find it difficult at
the start but seem to be very quick learners and will get grasp of
the game really quickly.

Sept 20th,2003
Londonderry, NH -
IFFF Selects
the Dominican Republic to Host the
5th Annual World Cup of Flag Football
The
International Flag Football Federation,
organizer of the World Cup of Flag Football, selected Puerto
Plata (Dominican Republic) to host the 5th annual World Cup
Event for Feb 26-29th, 2004. IFFF president Jim Zimolka (USA)
and Vice President Fernando Rodriguez (Uruguay) met with the
Ministry of Tourism and local officials to solidify the deal.
Puerto Plata was chosen for its green scenery, beautiful
beaches and extremely inexpensive costs. Last year's event in
the Bahamas was costly for many international teams, which
raised concerns to move the tournament to an alternative
location. |
