   61 USA Teams  have qualified
(this does not include international qualifiers)

Oct 19th,2004
Baton Rouge,LA

This year’s World Cup Qualifier in Baton Rouge was smaller than 2003, but it was certainly an exciting one.  With six teams playing in the seven-man division, it was a fun day of football in Baton Rouge, even though the mighty LSU Tigers were taking a weekend off.  The six teams had pool play in the morning, and playoffs in the afternoon.  Each of the six teams were interesting to watch in their own right.

The Plumbers were a scrappy & intense team that will be one to watch if they move on the World Cup.  The Sons of Asia were a reunion team that used to “rule the school” at LSU as the second-ranked team for four years in a row.  They were a little rusty coming together again, but just as fast with some impressive moves.  Goin’ for One stayed true to their name, and every extra point opportunity was played for the single point, and took a while to “gel” after having added some new players to their roster.  KAS was also a blending of two teams – with some super-athleticism, but their lack of play together made it tough for them to find their chemistry & get into a groove.  Hollywood Candy Corporation were newcomers to World Cup play, but a team with good athleticism and lots of heart.  And of course, the Hitmen of New Orleans were also in the house.  What is there to say about this team that has played together for so many years? Except that even though they don’t play much together as a team these days, they still have a chemistry that allows them to dominate on the field.

The playoff games were intense & exciting to watch, as KAS lost in a heartbreaker to Hollywood Candy Corporation (Hollywood). KAS attempted to go for two and the win, but their receiver had only one foot in bounds, so they would lose by one point, (and one foot).

Later in playoffs, The Hitmen run ruled Goin’ for One as they caught four interceptions and converted all of them to touchdowns, over a team that seemed to struggle to find chemistry with some new members, and those missed communications is what would hurt Goin’ for One in the long run.  And another heartbreaker would send Hollywood to the championship game, as the Plumbers were stopped at third & goal, and Hollywood’s defense would bat the ball down in the endzone for the win.

The Championship game featured the Hollywood Candy Corporation facing off against the Hitmen of New Orleans.  In the first half, Hollywood would score first, but the Hitmen would answer back with some big defensive plays and offensive drives that seemed unstoppable, as halftime finished with the Hitmen up 27 – 13.  The second half would open with a Hollywood offensive drive, but the defensive pressure by the Hitmen would earn the Hitmen a safety.  However, the Hitmen threw an interception on their drive, putting the momentum back into the hands of Hollywood.  The Hitmen’s defense came through yet again, batting down a ball in the endzone to prevent Hollywood from scoring.  Hollywood would score again, but couldn’t convert the extra points, and then the Hitmen threw an interception. Hollywood would score again to bring the count to 36 – 25.  Hollywood would go for two again inside the two-minute warning, but the Hitmen’s defense pulls through again and batted down the ball, and the clock would wind down leaving the Hitmen with the win.  Another exciting Saturday filled with football down in the bayou could bring some anticipation for this year’s World Cup play to a field near you.
