HANSCOM RAPTORS USE DEFENSE TO WIN REGIONAL TITLE

By: 1lt Miles

This past weekend the Hanscom AFB Raptors Varsity Flag Football team participated in the Boston World Cup Qualifier in Wakefield, MA. This was the first time that Hanscom AFB has ever participated in such a big sporting event. 46 teams from as far as Florida came out to qualify for the World Cup which will take place in Miami, Fla. in February, ’05. The World Cup will feature some 400 men, women, and youth teams from across the world. With that said, the Hanscom Raptors went into the weekend knowing that the competition would be tough in their Silver Division, but that all they needed was a 4th place finish or better to earn enough qualifying points.

On Saturday, 4 Dec. during their two exhibition games, the team suffered two devastating 1pt losses in overtime. The defenses played exceptional all day, but one hail marry pass in the first game that was tipped by a Raptor defender and into the hands of the opposing teams wide receiver who was lying on the ground sent the game into overtime where the Raptors fell, 13 to 12. The next game proved to be no difference. Leading their New York opponent 12 to 0 late in the game, the Raptors thought they had their final exhibition game all but won. Wrong! With 1:45 remaining in the game, the Raptors defense finally surrendered a touchdown, but were able to stop the extra point. Not much time remaining, all the Raptors had to do was catch the kick-off and kneel the ball three times and the game would be over. Although true, the Raptor return man did not catch the ball on the return. Instead, the ball hit him in his chest as he tried to catch it, popped up in the air a foot or two, and the opposing team caught the ball and waltzed into the end-zone, tying the game with :39 left on the clock. Led by Capt Brian Blew, the Raptor offense quickly moved the ball down the field, but a long pass completion came up a yard short as time expired. In overtime the team lost again by one point, 13 to 12.

After a good nights rest, the Raptors returned for Sundays single-elimination tournament ready for action. Round one was a face off between the Raptors and No Fear from Springfield, Ma. No Fear took a commanding 12-0 lead early in the game but the Raptors kept fighting. With :01 left before the half, Capt Blew threw a 45 yard touchdown pass to end the half. Trailing by six at halftime, the Raptors used this momentum to carry them the rest of the tournament. And I do mean the rest of the tournament because the Raptor defense did not allow another touchdown the rest of the day. During the second half, No Fear came within 17 yards of scoring once, but Seaman Johnathan Porter intercepted the ball and returned it 63 yards for a touchdown of his own. After beating No Fear 18 to 12, the Raptors readied themselves for the semi-finals where they would face previous World Cup Qualifier, Alumni from Marshfield, Ma. The Raptors proved to have to much speed for Alumni and cruised to a 6-0 victory. However, their final opponent, The Bulldogs from Dorchester, MA would be just as fast, not to mention the fact that their QB played in the American Football League a few years ago.

With one win, and a trip to Miami to participate in the World Cup separating the Raptors and the Bulldogs, both teams came out in championship form. The first few series for each team proved that this would indeed be a defensive battle. One stop-two stops-three stops-four, the Raptors’ 1Lt D. Miles intercepted the ball, and the Raptor offense knew they needed to score. On the ensuing drive, the Raptors offense began to pick the Bulldogs apart, capping the drive with a 40 yard TD from Capt Blew to Lt Miles. Leading 7-0, the Raptors scored on the next drive and took a commanding 13-0 lead over the Bulldogs in route to their Silver Division Championship!

Upon completion of the tournament, 1Lt D. Miles who finished the weekend with 6 touchdowns and 5 interceptions was notified on the morning of 6 Dec. by the International Flag Football Federation’s president that he and another teammate to be named by 10 Dec. have been chosen to play for Team USA for their 2005 world tour which features weekend tournaments in four countries.

Boston,MA-World Cup Qualifier Preview

Forty Six Teams have entered the 4th Annual Boston World Cup qualifying tournament this weekend.  This was the first World Cup event Sold out, as a few teams could not be accepted due to field limitations. Nine division champs will be crowned. This year a youth division has been added where 10 youth teams will battle it out. Just for Kidz is traveling all the way from harrisburg,pa, a 9  hour bus, for the event. But the Wildcats of Deerfield Beach,FL  are they farthest traveling team and will play in the women's division.
In the 8Man Gold Division, it will be local league favorite Alliance and Generals who will be the favorites, but Alibrandis return should give both these teams a game. In the 8Man Silver, both Maine teams are  returning. It was an all maine final in last years Silver Blizzard Championship. This will be the most competitive division, as three Boston Metro League Teams will take part, Hitsquad, Green Machine, and Bowl Hogs have entered. The Bowl Hogs are the only team in this division who have World Cup experience, as they participated in the Bahamas. Several new teams from new leagues have entered in this category, including two teams from Syracuse, league champs NYAFL Vikings, and a league All Star team called Field of Dreams All Stars. Springfield will be sending No Fear,  while Newport's league Champs the Red Dawgs will enter there forth qualifier. The Red Dawgs are the only team who have played ever  Boston qualifier.
The Bronze 8Man Division will have the return of Alumni, who have been idle for two years,
and Boston Metro Leagues new comers the Mauraders.

In the 4Man No Contact Division, 15 Teams have entered. East Side mafia of Laurel,MD have won the Gold div the last three years. They will have some tuff competition as the Superheroes have only lost one game this year. Looks for Get It Done to be the sleeper in this tournament. In the Silver Division, Strike force will be the team to beat as they have played in several recent tournaments. Look out  for
The Moe Sizlak 5, this is there third Boston World Cup  tournament.

The Youth Division will be played in Boston for the first time, as the Just for Kidz team from Harrisburg,PA is driving 9 hours in a charter bus(35 of them) to get here.  They will be faced by local teams the Chiefs and Bills of Peabody.

Last years qualifier was played 30 miles south of Boston  in the small historic town of Plymouth, ma where 32 inches of snow fell during the tournament. Amazingly all but one registered team made it.

1 to 2 inches of snow will hit Boston on Friday with the weekend a balmy of 45-55 F  predicted for both days
