Worcester,MA-
18 Teams from 8 states
took part in the first World Cup Qualifying Flag Football
Tournament of the year. Several teams traveled a great distance
just to qualify early for this years event which will be held in
the USA this year. The last time the World Cup extravaganza event
was held in the USA was in 2002 in Ft Lauderdale, FL where only 72
teams were allowed to play. Last years event was in the Dominican
Republic and the year before the Bahamas.
in the 5Man No Contact youth division, it was all traveling
teams as the reigning World Champs, the Raiders of Las Vegas,NV
traveled the furthest, 2000 miles to win the title by defeating
the Playmakers of Levitttown,PA 12-6. The Playmakers got on the
board first as #12 caught a 40 yard bomb in the fist half to take
an early 6-0 lead. The Raiders bounced right back when World Cup
MVP Jason Brown caught a 20 yard TD Strike from FlagMag's youth
Player of the year Mo Bonnett. Late in the 2nd half the two
connected once again for the win. The playmakers defeated the
Raiders Sat in pool play 15-14 in OT.
In the Mens 4Man Gold final it was the Superheros of
Londonderry,NH winning the title again, but this time without
there regular QB. They were lead by Team USA WR captain Jim Wilson
who played QB. In the Championship game vs DESU of
Storrs,CT(UCONN) the game was back and forth. DESU scored first
when Neil Ellie scored on a 15 yard dart, the Superheros quickly
responded when John Therriult scored on a 10 yard pass, DESU the
scored on a 15 yard pass to #12, to take the lead 12-6 but once
again just before the half Superheros Tony Ellis scored on a 20
yard pass to even the score. In the second half luck was on the
side of the Superheros, as they were given a controversial pass
interference call which brought the ball to the 10 yardline where
Tony Ellis scored the go head TD bringing the score to 18-12. Late
in the game a DESU defender batted a pass right into the hands
of Superheros receiver Matt Kling for the games final score..
In the 8man Ineligible Gold Division final, both teams were
undefeated at 3-0 as the Hitmen of Brockton,MA scored with 30
seconds remaining on a 10 yard pass from Anthony comer to Erik
Boatwright to defeat Alliance 20-19.Hitmens Gabe Boatwirght scored
the other Two Touchdowns.
In the 8Man Ineligible Silver division, it was C & S
construction of Yorkville,NY that went 4-0 and defeated the
Panthers of Manchester,NH 13-0 in the Title game. Qb Kenny Seger
threw two 30 yard touch down passes to Tom Cottrell and Tyrone
Sporight. C& S contruction has key performances from defensive
players Matt Ricardson and Rich Mannarilleo as they had two
shutouts and only allowed 14 points in four games, all in the
first day.
