CANADIANS TAKE MIAMI -SHOW WHY THEY ARE WORLD
CHAMPS
by Scott E. Green
Ft. Lauderdale (FL) - Florida has more outstanding 7Man No Contact
teams than any other state in the Union. Yet no Florida team has not
won the 7Man No Contact Ft. Lauderdale World Cup Qualifier since
2001. And this year it was no different.
Team Canada entered the tournament as a tune-up for the World Cup in
Miami Feb. 24th-28th.
On Saturday the Canadians did not do well for many reasons including
that they had to adjust from touch football rules to flag football
rules, fields with dimension that are not used in Canada and
recovering from Miami night life where bars do not close until 5 am.
However Saturday was merely for seeding.
Nevertheless on Sunday Team Canada cruised through a series of
massive victories in order to win the tournament. They smashed
Florida Memorial 29-0. Then they faced the no. 1 seed, Most Wanted
for the semi-finals in a savage back and forth game..
With 36 seconds remaining in the first half, Team QB Rod Moore
connected with Tony Stewart on a 50 yard strike to take a 20-14
lead. In the second half Most Wanted marched down to the three yard
line but failed to score and tie the game. Within the last 55
seconds Team Canada did a five yard pass to take a 25-20 lead.
However 'Tiger' of Most Wanted intercepted the conversion play and
touched down for the 2 points. However the game ended on the
interception of a Most Wanted pass by Team Canada's Wayne McCoy.
The championship game between Team Canada and Alpha Omega was
equally intense. The Canadians scored first with a 40 yard strike
from QB Rod Moore to James Finner who also caught the 1 point
conversion. Alpha Omega's QB Brian Baer answered back with a 20
scoring pass to Derrick 'Hollywood' Brown. This was answered back by
Team Canada's QB Moore's 55 yard pass to Tony Stewart (slipping by
defender Brian Blair).. The score was now 13-6. The awesome
Canadians stopped a scoring drive by Alpha Omega on their two yard
line. Then Stewart caught a pass over two defenders to run for a 35
yard scoring run. So Team Canada had a commanding 20-6 lead at the
end of the first half.
In the second half Alpha Omega scored first with a 20 yard run by
Derrick Brown. Team Canada answered back with a 20 yard scramble by
Donne Carle. Alpha Omega's final score came with a 40 yard run by
Quinton McEldon. Team Canada then had two unanswered touchdowns; a
40 yard backward run by Paul Shorten and a 20 yd catch by Gordon
Laverty. On defense Wayne McCoy had five interceptions.
In the Men's 4Man title game Legion of Doom took it by one point
over Down South, 21-20 in a back and forth battle that came down to
the games final play.
4Man Silver title was taken by Gold, a team under 18,beat another
under 18 team, Nothing Personal. The final score was 26-20.
Queen Beez took two titles, 7Man Woman (or should it be 7Person)
4Man Women. Eleven teams were in the tournament, the largest group
of women teams in a tournament so far.
To date over 100 teams have qualified for the 6th Annual World Cup
Extravaganza slated for Miami Feb 24-28th. Only the first 80 teams
will be allowed to enter due to field constraints and over 10 of the
biggest qualifiers remain.
