Start spreading
the news
Everyone wanted
to be a part of New York this past weekend as seventy teams showed
up to compete at popular venues such as the Long Island Baseball
Heaven Sports Complex and Giants Stadium, in what would be the
largest World Cup qualifying tournament of the year. NYC hosted
the tournament that included seven adult teams and sixty-three
youth teams, playing 5man no contact, and had the top teams in
each division qualify for the 6th Annual World Cup event scheduled
to take place on Feb. 24-27th in beautiful Miami, FL.
In the Men’s Gold
Division, Jimmy D’s House of Blues of Rutherford, NJ proved that
defense wins championships as they crushed their opponents and
took the championship game 18-0 over the Boston All Stars. The
defensive line silenced the offense by only allowing one touchdown
in the four games and taking fifteen sacks and ten batted balls in
tournament play.
The Men’s 4man
Title game saw the Boston All-Stars fall to 3rd and Long, 28-12.
3rd and Long had not lost since its first game in round robin play
vs. House of Blues, in which they came up short 46-28.
The Youth
division provided much excitement, as teams, such as the
Playmakers, created a name for themselves. The Playmakers from
Levittown, PA, competed in the 8 year old division and snatched
the victory in overtime from another Levittown, PA team, Central
Tech. In the semis, the Playmakers continued their run as they
took the Wayne Panthers 6-0 while Central Tech defeated the
Raiders 12-7. The Playmakers, Central Tech, Panthers and Raiders
all qualified for the World Cup Tournament.
The Gamebreakers
from Levittown, PA, defeated the Robins from Kiddlin, NJ 18-7 and
won the 9 year old division. Shawn Pepper is credited with
starting the fire that set his team on the path to victory as he
ran 60 yards for a touchdown. Continuing that energy was Kyle
Snyder who caught a 10 yard touchdown grab and gave his team the
12-0 lead. Dominic Yusinowicz of the Robbins ran 30 yards and
brought his team to within five, 12-7. However, Kyle Snyder ended
the Robbins hopes of a comeback as he ran 30 yards and produced
the final score, 18-7.
The 10 and 11
year old division title went to the Bulldogs of Rutherford, NJ
after they defeated the Vikings of E. Windsor, NJ. The 21-6 final
score is due largely in part to Tom Allen who showcased his
talents, scoring all three Bull Dog touchdowns. Allen’s first
score was from five yards out, his second was from ten, and the
last one came from fifteen. All three touchdown passes were sent
by QB Mike Piaskas. James Gonzalez is credited for three sacks
and one safety. In the semis, the Bulldogs defeated the Colts and
the Vikings defeated the Colts to round out the field of the final
four who qualified for the World Cup event in Miami.
At the 12 and 13
division, the score was tight and the intensity high as the
Gamebreakers and Eagles from Millville, NY battled it out.
However, Gamebreakers would eventually sneak past their opponent,
13-12. Both TD’s awarded to the Gamebreakers are credited to
Lenny Monks. Bruno Ratolline of the Eagles made two 30 yard runs
to bring his team to perfect winning position. However, the catch
by Taylor Nicole of the Gamebreakers would be fatal as it would
provide them the points needed to pull away. Even with possession
on the final play, the Eagles would allow an interception to run
away with any chance they had of taking the title. However, the
Eagles, along with the Panthers, Gamebreakers, and Titans all
qualified for the World Cup.
The 14 year old
division saw the Steelers defeat Lastada 8-0 for the title. The
Steelers, Lastrada, Bulldogs and All Stars all qualified for the
World Cup Tournament.
The boys 16 and 17 year old division, containing seasoned players,
was loaded with talent as the Panthers, last year’s regional
champions, fell to newcomers, Titans of Philadelphia 21-6. Both
the Rams and Panthers have previously played in World Cup
Tournaments. The Rams played in the Bahamas in 2003 and the
Panthers played in the Dominican Republic the following year.
This year, the Rams, Panthers, and Titans all qualify to attend
the World Cup in Miami.
