7-Man Men’s
Tournament – Palm Bay
The 7-man Palm Bay
tournament began in the early afternoon with the first game between
OPM of Orlando, and Malata of Palm Bay.
The score remained close
in the first half, and Malata fought valiantly in the second half.
However, OPM proved to be too much for Malata and won the first
game by a respectable margin of 33 to 14.
In the second game Alpha
Omega, ranked no. 2 by IFFF, took on OPM, and threw two
interceptions near the goal in the 1st half to fall
behind, quickly, 14-0. Alpha Omega fought back in the second half
to briefly take the lead. However, OPM found a weak spot at a
corner on defense (we won’t mention any names, but Harold Bornelus
was not one of Alpha Omega’s favorite people, for a while) OPM
exploited this poor excuse of a man masquerading as a cornerback for
3 easy TD’s to pull the game out of the fire. Alpha Omega got the
ball back, down four points, with less than 30 seconds to play.
They drove the ball to the ten and had one chance to win, but
miss-fired with an open receiver in the endzone. OPM won 26-22.
Alpha Omega then played
Malata again. Once again, it was a hard fought game, but Alpha
Omega prevailed, winning by 2 scores, 26 – 14.
CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
- Alpha Omega then played OPM again. This time it was Alpha Omega
pulling out to a 14-0 lead with outstanding defense by Harold
Bornelus, Kiet Boggus, Derrick “Hollywood” Brown and the rest of the
Alpha Omega defense.
Alpha Omega’s QB, Brian
Baer, played an unbelievable game, spreading the ball around to all
of his receivers and using his talented HB, Kiet Boggus
effectively. However, OPM mounted a comeback in the second half,
and with less than a minute to go, scored to come within one point
of Alpha Omega. They courageously elected to go for a 2-point try,
and OPM’s QB hit their right wide receiver on a slant to go up by
one point!
Unfortunately, there
were 50 seconds left on the clock. Brian Baer threw a lateral pass
to Kiet Boggus, who threw a bulls eye pass to Keith McKeithen
running a deep “corner” route. Keith was deflagged at the 5 yard
line. Alpha Omega scored two plays later.
Time ran out on OPM, who
lost a hard-fought battle to Alpha Omega, coached by Craig Miller,
who also serves as coach of Team USA.
Alpha Omega’s MVP awards
were given to several players who had outstanding games: Derrick
Brown, Brian Baer, Kiet Boggus, Keith McKeithen, and Steve Davis.
Other outstanding players for the game included Harold Bornelus,
Francis Bornelus, Gabe Paret, Carlos Rodriguez, and Chris Glover.
4-Man Men’s
Tournament – Palm Bay
The 4-Man Tournament in
Palm Bay, Florida featured 3 teams: Alpha Omega A, Alpha Omega B
from Pompano Beach and the Caped Crusaders from Palm Bay.
In the first game, Alpha
Omega “A” defeated the Caped Crusaders in a hard fought battle.
In the second game Alpha
Omega B lost to the Caped Crusaders. Rather than play a third
round-robin game, Alpha Omega B forfeited to Alpha Omega A, in order
to begin the final playoff early.
Several of Alpha Omega B
players arrived late, but in time to play after the next game
started between Alpha Omega B and the Caped Crusaders. However,
Caped Crusaders still prevailed and defeated Alpha Omega B by a
score of 20 to 14.
The championship
game between Alpha Omega A and Caped Crusaders was a hard-fought,
see-saw battle, with Alpha Omega A winning the championship 25 to 19.
