Team USA battled Hurricane Frances and others in Panama for a World Cup tune up.  In these games there were four men’s and four women’s teams participating.  Team USA, with connections through Miami had to deal with the delays of Hurricane Frances as at noon on the day of departure the airport was shut down for two days.  Once in Panama the teams had to deal with Frances on the field.
The event was dubbed the Panama Mud Bowl because of the four inches of standing water on the field.  In the men’s division Team USA won the championship won in a 14-12 thriller. Team USA jumped out first as QB Jim Zimolka hit Lance Batan for a 5-yard pass that had Batan eluding several defenders for a 7-0 lead.  Panama inched closer on the final play of the first half when QB Carlos Cohen hit Pepe Gonzalez for a 40-yard bomb for the 7-6 halftime Team USA lead. In the second half Zimolka hit Matt Kling on a 40-yard post pattern, this time converting the extra point for a 14-6 lead.  With 15 seconds left to play Cohen hit MVP Frederick Martez with back-to-back 30-yard passes, the second resulting in a TD pulling Panama to within two.  Team USA’s Jim Wilson came up big batting down the extra point attempt to preserve the win.
In the women’s division Golden Queens won the ultimate defensive struggle by winning the title 2-0 on a safety.  Panama is the fourth largest country playing in the women’s division now, behind Mexico, Canada and the USA.  This was the first time Panama got a view of how the World Cup competition is played.  Team USA put on clinics for the Panamanians showing them things like passing drills, routes, plays and flag pulling drills.  With the extra experience Panama is even more ready for the World Cup and ready to be a contender.
Panama played great hosts to Team USA by greeting them at the airport and showing them the nightlife and other advantages of Panamanian culture.
