The Road to Paradise Starts In Canada?
Maroons win Montreal Qualifier
Every year thousands of spring breakers from hundreds of colleges
nationwide migrate to the city of Panama City Florida for a week of
beach, booze, sun-burns and bikinis. College flags from all over the
country proudly hang out balcony windows. This year a different
group of "flag bearers" has its sights set on this tropical paradise
as Panama City will play host to the 2006 World Cup of Flag
Football.
The first step on the road to paradise is never easy and this year
will be no exception as the journey began last weekend some 1,594
miles north of Flag Football's promise land. In Montreal, Canada 16
teams, from 3 countries (USA, Mexico and Canada) began World Cup
Qualifying play.
In the Men's A Division, Canada's own Maroons, looked like they
wanted to charter the Concorde and head straight to Florida.
Dominating play throughout the weekend, the Maroons had their
opponents seeing red as they went 5-0 and winning by a combined
margin of 127-47. The Maroons defeated Oakley in the Men's A
Division finals by a score of 36-14
"It was a great opening weekend", said Maroon team captain John
LeFever. 'We have our sights firmly set on Florida. We know what we
want and we know what it takes to get there."
The Maroons rolled through round robin competition at 3-0 by
defeating FMB 20-8, Oakley 20-13 and FlagMag 37-12. In the quarters
those Maroons blanked FMB, rolling to a 20-0 victory.
Oakley's road to the final match was not so simple. Losing its
opening game to FlagMag 33-7, they bounced back with a win over FMB
35-14. In a much tighter game that the one played in the finals,
Oakley put up a fight before eventually losing to the Maroons 20-13.
In the quarters, Oakley dominated with defense downing FlagMag 12-0.
On the Women's side, this Qualifier hosted one of the largest fields
in history, as 16 teams took to the field. It also may have played
host to one of the biggest upsets in Women's Flag Football history,
as Geants knocked off 6-Time Mexican College National Champions
Aguilas Blanca 20-6.
One Qualifier is in the books. For the rest there are 18 more
qualifiers to go. As 1,594 miles to the south the sun is shining,
the blenders are whirring, the beer waiting. See you there.
