Twelve teams will take part in the 2nd annual Houston World Cup Qualifing tournament. This year the competion has intensified since the World Cup will be played nearyby in Panama City,FL. Teams from houston will have  short trip of 9 hours in a car to the Spring break capital of the USA.

A Lone Bright Spot

New Orleans Team Wins Houston Qualifier

This past weekend, the city of New Orleans had its hands full with powerful Hurricane Katrina. The cities streets were deluged with 15 foot waves. Canals have overflowed and flooded a city that is dangerously close to sea level. Winds, some in excess of 100 MPH tore pieces off the roof of the New Orleans Superdome. But there is some good news. I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to Geico.

Seriously, the good news lies in the Flag Football world, where New Orleans Team Mayhem (could there have been a more aptly named team this weekend?)  won the 7 man division at the World Cup Qualifier in Houston, Texas. In the 8-man division, an All-Houston final took place as Mayhem knocked off All Madden 18-7 to win the Championship.

While Houston is only 345 miles west of New Orleans, the weather could not have been more different. While New Orleans was being belted with the worst Katrina had to offer, Houston had sunny skies and temperatures of 95 degrees.

“I am sure everybody’s hearts and minds were on the storm,” said IFFF President Jim Zimolka. “It was an intense regional to begin with. Add in the emotional element for the New Orleans teams, it just took the competition to a whole new level.”

12 teams participated in the event, which is just a 9-hour drive from Panama City, Florida, home of the 2006 YOUWAGER.COM Flag Football World Cup. That is a very short drive with the potential for some very high rewards.

“It was great to see the New Orleans teams, not only show up, but play as well as they did,” said Zimolka. “Those guys had every reason in the world to just mail it in…but no…Mayhem comes in and completely dominates the 7-man division.”

While they may be one step closer to Panama City, the next step for these guys is to go home and assess the damage from the storm. We here at Flag Mag hope that their homes escaped without damage, and that all their families are safe. Good Luck and see you in Panama City. In the meantime, Mayhem have something to keep a smile on their faces…and ours as well!!!!!
