War
on the Field in the Land of the Inca
Monterrey Mexico to Host World Cup Qualifier
Mexico has a long history of dynasties in their lands. The Mayans
and the Incas are usually the 1st 2 that come to mind.
Over the last 10 years a New Mexican dynasty has come to light,
Aguilas Blanca. This new addition to Mexico’s proud line of
dynasties is the 5-time Women’s Flag Football World Champions.
Aguilas Blanca along more than 50 other Men’s and Women’s Flag
Football teams will take to the field in Monterrey, Mexico this
weekend in a World Cup Qualifying competition.
In
fact the tournament will be largely dominated by teams from the Land
of the Sun. Over 3/4s of the field are expected to be teams from
Mexico.
This is the 3rd qualifier as teams look towards the Flag Football
World Cup to be held in Panama Beach, Florida, March 29-April 2,
2006. This is an especially exciting year for the Flag Football
community as the World Cup will take place the same week as most
United States Universities Spring Break. Panama City has
historically been considered one of the Spring Break Capitals of the
World. Now add in the World Cup Tournament, and you have a recipe
for one of the most exciting weekends in the cities history.
But
that is nearly a year and 10+ qualifiers away. This weekend all eyes
will be on Monterrey, Mexico, the next stop on the Road to Panama
Beach. And nobody ever said the road to paradise is easy. Many teams
will easily travel in excess of 1,000+ miles to reach this
Qualifier. For the teams that a mere 5 weeks ago played in the 1st
World Cup qualifier in Montreal, Canada, they will continue on a
journey some 2,356 miles away.
Once they arrive, they will find themselves in the Lions Den as the
Mexico City teams have a history as long and proud as the region
itself. At least 3 Men’s teams and 2 Women’s teams from Mexico have
played in the last four Flag Football World Cups.
Home field advantage indeed!!!!
It
promises to be an exciting weekend south of the Border as the
upstart US teams, weary from long bus, car and plane trips take to
the field in hopes of taking the next step towards Flag Football’s
Holy Grail. Who will rise to the challenge and who will be left in
the dirt like an ancient Incan ruin?

Underdogs No Longer
Mexican Teams on the Rise
“Oh-Oh Mexico. I’ve never, ever been, but I’d sure like to go.”
The
immortal words of James Taylor. In print he has stated that the song
was for ex-wife Carley Simon’s desire to visit the land of the Sun.
Recently a new legend about the song has come to light. It seems
Taylor is a huge flag football fan. Rumor has it he has been to
every single World Cup. After seeing the event dominated by Team USA
(5 Championships) and Team Canada (1 World Cup) he wrote the song
from the fictional view point of the actual WORLD CUP TROPHY…that
has never been to Mexico, but would sure like to go.
Yes, tragically enough, the trophy has never been to Mexico, as the
team has yet to win a World Cup title. This year might be a
different story as the Mexican teams are vastly improved. This was
on display this past weekend at the World Cup Qualifier held in
Monterrey, Mexico. A pair of Mexican teams played in the final game
as Texcoco held off a furious rally by fellow countrymen the
Cadillacs 26-16 to win the Championship.
Both teams had reached the 2005 World Cup but were eliminated
quickly by American squads. In fact, 200 Mexican players
participated in the 2005 competition. They all played tough games,
before eventually losing to Canadian or American squads. Mexico’s
best finish in World Cup play took place in 2003 when they reached
the Finals, before dropping a heartbreaker to Team USA.
“There is no doubt these guys are getting better,” says Team USA’s
Jim Zimolka. “It used to be that we all looked forward to playing
the Mexican teams. Sure the games were exciting as they have always
had great offensive squads. However, we all knew that they were not
so great on “D”, and if we kept scoring we would eventually beat
them. That is not the case anymore.”
Team USA learned that first hand in the qualifiers semifinals, as
they lost to the Cadillacs (Mexico), 26-16. Team USA had traveled to
Mexico shorthanded, arriving with only a 6-man squad. After picking
up 2 local players, Team USA won their first four games, before
bowing out in the semis. All the squads early round games were vs.
Mexican competition .
“All those Mexican teams were tough, real tough,” says Team USA’s
Jim Zimolka. “Every year that we come down here, those guys just get
better and better. Look at the scores, every game we played was a
dogfight.”
Speaking of dogfights, perhaps that is the only way to describe the
Qualifier’s Championship game. Texcoco (Mexico), another team who
played in the 2005 World Cup, jumped out to a 26-6 lead vs. the
Cadillacs. However, with 2 minutes to go in the match, the Caddy’s
found their 2nd wind. Making a furious comeback, the
Cadillacs recovered 2 onside kicks marching them in for TDs. Looking
to pull off an unheard of 3rd onside kick, Texcoco
decided enough was enough and recovered the kick. Rally over. Game,
set and match to Texcoco.
In
the women’s Qualifier, one might have thought it would be a walk
over for the dynasty that is Aguilas Blancas. After all, their
resume boasts 4-World Cup titles along with 6-Mexican College
National Championships. This is a team with a legacy in Mexico right
up there with the Incas and the Mayans.
Facing stiff competition from the Tigres (Mexico), Aguilas Blancas
dominated with defense to take the championship game, 8-0. Aguilas
Blancas looked strong throughout the qualifier, as they did not
allow ONE SINGLE POINT in any of the 5 games they played (5-0). In
fact they outscored their opponents by a combined score of 104-0.
This year’s model looks as strong as ever and will the team to beat
at the World Cup.
For
the Tigres getting to the finals is a success story onto itself.
Last season, the Tigres played in 2 World Cup qualifiers, but did
not win a single game. Playing across the border in Dallas and
Houston, the Tigres dropped all 11 contests they played by nearly 20
points a game. This team is on the rise and is a strong candidate to
win one of the regional qualifiers.
With 3 qualifiers in the books, we are creeping closer and closer to
the 2006 YOUWAGER.COM Flag Football World Cup. The event will be
held in Panama City, Florida, March 30-April 2, 2006. This date is a
month later than the Cup has been held in the past, as organizers
have synched the quest for Flag Football’s Holy Grail with one of
Spring Breaks busiest weekends. It promises to be quite the reward
for the teams that endure and conquer one of the 18 regional
qualifiers. For Texcoco and Aguilas Blancas, the frozen drinks are
waiting poolside for their arrival. For James Taylor, Texcoco puts
the World Cup trophy one team closer to it’s dream vacation.
