On a cold rainy, windy
day. Ten teams participated in the Utica World Cup Qualifier.
The Vikings came out victorious and win the Championship in a hard
fought battle with Breijen Contracting. Final Score 37-32.
Vikings were led by a trio of recievers that torched the Breijen
Contracting defense. Ricky McVay, Dave Hogan and Ryan Darling had
their way making short catches and running through, around and all
over the opposing defense. Breijen fought back with a strong
effort from "ZUP" their shifty, strong armed quarterback who
didn't have his best day finding open receivers but was able to
compensate by running for three scores.
The game opened with
Breijen scoring first and taking a 7-0 lead. Vikings next
possesion QB, Dan Herrman, found a wide open Darling running down
the sideline to tie the score 7-7. Breijen took their next
possesion and looked as if they were going to punch another score
in when Ricky McVay intercepted "ZUP" at the goaline and returned
it for the Vikings second score. Vikings 14-7. Brejein would
score quickly on a long QB scramble and run, but would fail on the
extra point, 14-13. Vikings got the ball back and on the very
next play, Hogan catches a quick slant and and takes it the
distance. Vikings 21-13. Both teams battle back and forth and
field position becomes a factor when the Vikings defense gets a
safety from defensive end Dave Parker. Vikings 23-13. Breijen
would not go away and "Zup" finds his TE Cory on a deep post for
the TD, but again miss the extrapoint, Vikings 23-19 at half.
Second half begins and Breijen would score to take the lead,
25-23. But again miss their extrapoint! Vikings would strike
quickly. On their first play a quick screen to Darling and he
does the rest for his second touchdown of the game. Vikings 31,
Breijen 25. Breijen's would score again to tie it at 31-31 with
just over 3 minutes to play. Vikings would march down the field
and receiver Art Randall comes up with a huge catch on forth down
to keep the drive alive, the next play would result in a TD catch
for receiver Ricky McVay to take the lead, 37-31. Vikings need
the extrapoint to ensure at least a tie, in case Brejein would
score again in the final minute. But this time Breijens defense
comes up big and they intercept the pass and return it for the
score making the score 37-32. Breijen now has the chance they
were looking for, score a TD and win the championship.
BUT the Vikings
defense comes up big and stops them and midfield as time expires.
Vikings take the
Championship ------------- 37-32!!!!
