Team USA returns to Venezuela and will take on an anxious group of Venezuelans looking to show team USA how much they have improved since there last visit 3 years ago. The Venezulan men have not participated in a world cup since 2001 in Ft lauderdale, where they had a strong 5th place finish.Team USA will be short staffed due to Hurricane Katrina but should give the Venezuelans a good match,.

Learning on the Job
Team USA shutout in Venezuela
Blame it on the Hurricane. Blame it on the Full Moon. Blame it on improved play. Blame no one, and tip your caps to the victors. These are the questions Team USA asked themselves after going winless in all-divisions of the Venezuelan Flag Football Challenge this past weekend.

Yes, unfortunately, I did say shut out. The 8-man team went, 0-2, and the 4-man team went 0-3, thats winless at 0-5 this past weekend. Some grim results indeed for Team USA. This should most definitely serve as a wakeup call for Team USA who has yet to gel this summer in International competition.

“We are looking for guys who can step up in International play,” said Team USA captain Jim Zimolka. “Team USA PLayers from last years roster must play in at least 2 International events to play for the Team this year at the World Cup.
Of the 30 available slots, only 4 have been filled so far with just one international event left in Costa Rica. . As such it looks like 26 slots are up for grabs this season.Players participating in the Costa Rica are almost assured a spot for Team USA Scheduled to play in Panama City Beach,Fl during spring break.

While team USA looks for players, the Venezuelan teams seem to be clicking.

“The Venezuelan teams are much improved,” said Zimolka. “They certainly seem like they will be a force to be reckoned with at the World Cup. These teams and the Mexican squads are certainly the most improved teams we have played so far.”

The tournament, which took place in Caracas, hosted 14 teams, 8 of which came from nearby Valencia (a short 2-hour drive). From a regional standpoint this proved to be an extremely interesting competition. The finals in both divisions pitted a team from Valencia against a team from Caracas. The Valencia teams were both crowned champions as in 8-man, the MLC knocked off the Jaguars 6-2. In 4-man play Team X beat the Jags 7-0.

As the World Cup gets closer, these foreign teams have a lot to look forward to. This year’s competition seems more wide open than ever. Team USA who will continue to learn on the job. Chalk up this rough weekend to a harsh lesson taught by the Venezuelans.
