DALLAS REGIONAL WORLD CUP QUALIFIER
SEPTEMBER 29 & 30, 2001

TOURNAMENT RECAP

The 2001 Dallas Regional Qualifier was held at Fair Oaks Park. With only two fields available, twenty teams battled it out for points, prizes, and the chance to play for TEAM USA. Some teams backed out of the tournament, given the events on September 11, 2001, some teams were unwilling to travel or participate. So five teams competed for Silver Prizes in the 7-Man competition, and twelve teams competed for Silver Prizes in the 4-Man division. (As there were not enough teams to fill each division, the majority of teams previously entered the Silver division, so those prizes were awarded). The Hitmen of New Orleans defeated the Storm of Houston for 7-Man honors, and the Gulfcom Gators battled through a three game play-off with Venom to take home 4-Man honors.

The three men chosen to represent TEAM USA at the World Cup tournament February 21 - 22, 2002 at the Miami Dolphins Training Facility in Ft. Lauderdale. Darryn Melerine of the New Orleans Hitmen (#80) with 6 touchdowns, 2 extra points, and 6 interceptions for the day. Frank Ildebrando of Venom (#21) had 5 touchdowns, 1 extra point, and 1 interception. And Rob Sloane of the New Orleans Hitmen (#12) connected for 5 touchdowns, 3 extra points, and 2 interceptions. These men were chosen not only for their athletic abilities, but also for their sportsmanship and attitude displayed on the field of play. As there were not enough women's teams entered to run a tournament, two female members of Houston Storm's Co-Rec team got a chance to play in one game, and have been invited to join TEAM USA at the World Cup. Michelle Smith and Tonya Plsek made an impressive showing in the all-male 7-man division, and will join TEAM USA in Florida. It should also be noted that the Burger King Hustlaz (youth 12 - 16 team) made a respectable showing in the men's Silver 4-man competition.

MVP honors were also awarded. In 7-Man action, Richard Everett of the New Orleans Hitmen (#22), QB, led his team to a 3-0 record, tallying 144 points on the day. Matt Kacal of the Houston Storm (#8), QB, led his team to a 3-2 record, earning 140 points for the day. In 4-Man action, Victor Hollings of the Gulfcom Gators (#1) had 8 touchdowns and four extra points on the day, while Leroy Bradley of Venom (#2) tallied six touchdowns and four extra points for the tournament.

Flag-A-Tag, World Cup sponsor, had a booth to sell flags for individuals or teams to buy, adjacent to the World Cup retail booth. Local sponsor Cooper Spa & Fitness was also on-hand with a tent offering sports massage for athletes and spectators looking to loosen up a few muscles. The University of Texas-Arlington men's lacrosse team volunteered to run concessions, while earning money for their team. The tournament qualified 17 teams for the World Cup Open tournament, and we wish them the best as they move on to the competition in February!! Tournament results are listed below.
