LA REGIONAL WORLD CUP QUALIFIER
OCTOBER 20 & 21, 2001

WEST COAST SHOWS FIERCE COMPETITION!!

Teams from as far away as Oregon traveled to qualify for the World Cup, as the West Coast brought out their best teams and impressed the IFFF World Cup committee with its overall talent and sportsmanship. This made the selection for Team USA a difficult one, as only four players were selected - but several athletes were listed as potential candidates to fill the rest of TEAM USA. The IFFF chose WR-Joe Adamson of Napa, CA; Kyman Harris of Oakland, CA; Kevin Kurek of Cleveland, OH; and Gaye Harris of Oakland, CA.

Both the 8-Man and the 4-Man proved to be extremely competitive - as most games came down to the wire. In the 8-Man championship, the local team - Harry O's Bad Boyz defeated the South Bay Ballers 28-21, as the last play of the game was batted down to preserve the win. The prior game between these two teams had also come down to the last play. Harry O's MVP - Joe Johnson made four spectacular one handed TD catches, which caught everyone's attention. Mike Mitchell of the South Bay Ballers (former Stanford athlete) - #32 was also named MVP for his four touchdowns and six extra points.

In the 4-Man GOLD Division, Team Chaos proved to be unbeatable, as they defeated an impressive cast of top-notch teams. In the championship game, they blew out an exhausted Misfits team 35-7 by the 28-point mercy rule. Misfits had played a tiring seven games. Chaos MVP was WR-Todd "Light" Smith who had six TD's for the tournament. And Donnie Bucks of the Misfits was named MVP with an impressive 12 TD's.

In the 4-Man BRONZE Division, the Eastsiders defeated local rival Heat 33-26 in a closely contested game. This was the IF game - as all three games between these two teams came down to the final play. Eastsider MVP was Q.B.-Christian Madrigal who threw for 15 Td's in the day. Lawrence Coulter of the HEAT was also named MVP. The Chargers and Dwarfs were to be commended for their performance, as each team had players in there 50's and 60's competing for the Division Title.

The Los Angeles Avengers, the local arena football team, showed up to show their support for the growth of flag football and the World Cup. Their field marketing team brought out their tent and gave away sweepstakes prizes including: hats, visors, tees, cups, and autographed footballs. Avenger athletes Harry Leons and Kelron Sykes were on-hand to take part in the Celebrity Flag Football game. Avengers "A-Team" Dancers Rachel and Sacha also showed up to show their support and signed Avenger "A-Team" calendars for the spectators and athletes attending the tournament. The most impressive show of athleticism of the Celebrity Game was Gaye Harris (former TEAM USA member), who made many catches and over 5 touchdowns to give her team the Celebrity Game win. Gaye was selected to play for TEAM USA in February at the World Cup. A special thank you to the Avengers organization and their staff for showing us their support!!
